My Join-Up® Experience

join up fail

Please upload your photo
I have a 3 year old unbroken connemara gelding. He has only had a couple of months of handling and is coming along nicely. I tried join up for the first time today and he gave me all four signs in the first 5 minutes. However, when I turned away at a 45 degree angle with my eyes down and fingers closed, he did not join up and just kept on walking. Any tips on what to do next?

Hello, I’d watch all the join up videos again. I especially learned from the join up with the young girl. Don’t be discouraged. It’ll happen and be worth the effort! Best wishes!

Hi Sally & welcome to the Uni. Firstly, I suggest you study the lessons on Join up again & again, then practice your body language in front of a mirror - so often we do not realise the mistakes we unwittingly make & lastly, practice your breathing control. If you had too much anticipation of Join up your horse would have read that. Do not be put off. No, it's not easy - until it becomes habit ( second nature ) but I can confirm from my first hand experience that all the effort is well worth it. Cheers, Jo.

Hello!
Hey Sally!

Congrats.  Yes watch all the different join up videos maybe 2 times each to start.  I thought I had it.  Then 3 horses taught me different.  A pony and two mini mares lol.  Then when I took on my first horse as an owner just recently I realized I had even more to tweak and perfect and learn.   And whoa I realized I wasn’t doing about 3-4 things with my posture that Monty was.  Join up worked before but with this abused Paso it wasn’t show easy.  On the fourth join up I got all the signals and he walked right up to my shoulder for join up.  Then follow up.  And then didn’t want to be with me to be saddled.   So keep going! It’s not a hoax

Hello!
I’m sorry Sally the “Horse who didn’t want to be caught” series with Sonny is the one where I learned even more and this one helped me with my Paso fino.   And a young Andalusian stallion who again I had no round pen or arena to work in.  Just a very small box stall with low walls that I could bale out if I was in danger.  He wouldn’t let me near him  to get the dually halter or a rope halter at all. So I had the crazy idea to start the conversation of equips right there in this tiny box stall ( this was a horse breeding farm in ca and not great conditions ) with very low energy in my body and eyes and very slow movements I began to send him off me in a circle to the left at a slow walk.  It was like a tango.  Then to the right waiting for just one gesture, two if I was lucky.  I finally got the ear then a smaller circle I invited him in a few times with no luck.  So I arched best I could around him and with my eyes at his chest.  Energy still low and deep diaphragmatic breathing (which I picked up from vocal lessons ) he allowed me to approach him and put he dually on then lead him out.  This beautiful buckskin 2 year old stallion had been handled but in a domineering way and a very strong come her demeanor.  He did not know me.  So after all this I watched “the horse who didn’t want to be caught series” and learned even more.  It clicked.  Be safe and have fun!
