I've been doing join up but I need some advise! I have a video of one of my attempts:

I will make another video of my more rounder pen later
And lunging my horse needs some exercise but I don't know how to teach him how to lunge!
Hi AppyBullseye
It seems i am the first to view your video! I will start by saying it is a great thing that you have found your way to monty's methods and are giving it a go :-) Unfortunately there are quite a few thing wrong with your attempt but please don't take any of my suggestions harshly as we are all learning and anything i say is only meant to help you improve :-) I myself have made plenty of mistakes!
Firstly we will address your roundpen...
In order to attempt join up you need a safe area with good footing and adequate fencing. If you have room to set up a more evenly shaped round pen with another line of fencing that would be a great start. I have a round pen with two strands of white polt tape or sometimes called hot tape. I have made it 16 metres diametre. I did this by measuring 8 metres of tape, putting a stake in the ground roughly where i want the middle of my pen and fixing my 8 metres of tape to the stake. This gave me an even pen as i just put my posts at the end of the tape spaced evenly apart and there you have a 16 metre diametre yard. Don't forget a gate!
Also i noticed that you have quite a bit of snow built up so your horse has to jump through it sometimes. This interupts the flow of join up and it was affecting your ability to communicate with your horse, it distracts him as he has to be watching his footing instead of you! It is also unsafe footing for you! Safety is always first! Try to clear the ground so your roundpen has no hinderances and if it is icy don't even try to do join up!
Secondly it would be good if you could have a long line in the pen with you to flick out at your horse to keep him moving so you don't have to chase him with your short lead. This means you can stay a bit more central to your pen and YOU will be the one controlling the horses direction.
When doing join up never let the horse change direction unless asked to by yourself. I noticed your horse would come to the corner and change direction and you just let him go. Never do this as you are supposed to be the one to control the direction. If he changes direction you send him back the way he came! Watch Monty's videos on join up on here and he will tell you all about that.
I think once you have a better set up area to do join up then you will be much more successful in your attempt.
I hope some of this helps!
Good luck with it all and let us know how you progress
Janelle
I love your horse he's so pretty, it made me laugh every time he'd run up to the camera and put his nose in it. I agree with Janelle, you definitely need a rounder pen so the horse is not stopping in places and all the snow is distracting for you and your horse. You were spending so much time trying to keep him going and watch your footing that there's no room for communication between you and your horse. Your horse should make 5 to 6 circles in one direction before turning him to go in the other direction making another 5 to 6 circles then back again. At that point you start to have a conversation with your horse, looking for the 4 gestures. Watch Monty's video's over and over again until you really understand everything that you need to do and then try again. Good luck!
Thank you both so much! This will really help me! I will take your advise and use it maybe i can shovel or wait till the snow melts to try again? Thank you again
I tried to watch your video, but for some reason couldn't. I too live where there is snow. I have opted to wait until all the snow is gone, which it is now (YAAAY!!) before I try my first JoinUp. I hope your next attempt goes beautifully! :)
I just watched your video and your attempt was great.
It is difficult to do in the winter and with that much snow.
He is a beautiful horse. How old is he and what kind?
In addition to the above adivce.
You were doing really good things, driving him forward with your body and slaping the rope on your chest, that is good.
A couple of things you can try next time.
1. Always remember where the drive line is. Between the front shoulders and the back hip. If you keep your toes pointed directly at this point, while you are walking, at all time you will keep the horse moving. Keep your shoulders square.
2. Don't forget to throw the long line at his back end, this too will help him to keep moving.
Can't wait to see your next video.
Ronda :)
An easier way to get to watch the video is: type in Hollywood5551 on the youtube search bar and then type in attempt to do join-up. It should come up for everyone under that name.
