Introducing the “life style” of our horses

Hello!

Hi everybody!
Introducing the “life style” of our horses could be a help for a better understanding.
I put together a few questions:
1. Stallion, mare or gelding?
2. How old is the horse?
3. Height?
4. Does your horse live alone or in company to socialize?
5. Pasture, paddock or box?
6. Plan land or mountains ?
7. Climate , seasons and soil?
8. Do you live with your horse or do you keep him in a stable?
9. How often do you feed ?
10. How often do you work, play or walk with him ?
11. Do you have a roundpen or any other space to work with your horse?
12. What kind of riding do you practice ?
13. What kind of bit ?
14. Shoes or barefoot ?
15. How many years o experience with horses ?
Copy and past the questions to your answer and answer them putting the corresponding number in front.
1. Gelding
2. 6 years
3. 1,65m
4. Lives with a donkey
5. Open box in big paddock, 70mx30m and a small pasture of 70m x 70m.
6. Hilly countryside in Tuscany- Italy
7. Hot summer, a lot of flies, hard clay soil in summer, muddy and sticky in winter, almost no snow, hardly below zero.
8. I live with my horse.
9. He has hay for 24 hours and can eat whenever he likes.
10. Every day
11. Roundpen and open country side
12. Difficult to say, I have English saddle and use a rope halter
13. No bit, rope halter
14. Barefoot
15. 40 years with interruptions

Try not make the answers to long, this should be a short introduction of how your horse.
I hope you join.

1. Stallion, mare or gelding?
Gelding, filly, filly
2. How old is the horse?
6,3, and 2
3. Height?
14.2hh, approx. 15 hh, and approx. 15hh
4. Does your horse live alone or in company to socialize?
The three of them live together
5. Pasture, paddock or box?
I have a smaller paddock with their water/shelter and I have a 4ish acre pasture attacked that I can leave open.
6. Plan land or mountains ?
plain land, I live in farm country
7. Climate , seasons and soil?
It gets hot and humid in the summer and way below freezing in the winter. Our soil isn't at all rocky but when it gets muddy its like a browny mix
8. Do you live with your horse or do you keep him in a stable?
I live with them
9. How often do you feed ?
in the summer they eat out in the pasture, last winter I only fed them twice a day but they had enough to munch on almost 24/7.
10. How often do you work, play or walk with him ?
I spend time grooming and playing with them everyday unless the weather is too awful, I haven't regularly worked on training too much yet.
11. Do you have a roundpen or any other space to work with your horse? I may be able to have a round pen when I get back to my house at the end of the month, but as of right now I only have the paddock and pasture or my lawn.
12. What kind of riding do you practice ?
I wouldn't say I am western or english, I am just more into learning more about my horses and having a strong relationship with them.
13. What kind of bit ?
I don't use a bit with my gelding just a rope halter, one because I would like for my horse to be able to respond well without a bit, and two because my gelding has his wolf teeth and I was under the impression that they can interfere with a bit and cause pain.
14. Shoes or barefoot ?
All three are barefoot
15. How many years o experience with horses ?
I didn't get horses of my own till about a year ago but I had ridding/handling experience on and off since I was young.

I tried to make my answers short and sweat, Its so easy to get carried away when talking about your horses.

2. 18 yrs, 4 yrs, 16 yrs, 11 yrs, 11 weeks
3. 15.2 hands, 15 hands, 14.1 hands, 15.3 hands, baby
4. The geldings live together and the mares and foals live together. All can socialise over the fence. Foals move in with the geldings when they are weaned.
5. Paddock.
6. Plain land with hills and a seasonal creek.
7. Sub-Tropical, can get very hot and dry and can also get very cold and dry. Can rain non-stop during summer. We have distinct seasons and the soil is a mix of red and sandy soils. Soils in this are are low in minerals.
8. Our horses live with us on our property.
9. Feed once every day.
10. I work, touch and play with the horses as much as my work allows me to. Every day if I can. Not always possible though.
11. We have two round pens, one Monty size and a smaller one. We are building an arena and I have a cleared space where my Western Trail obstacles are set up.
12. Western/Reining foundation to my training, also do Barrel Racing and used to play Polo Cross. Learning how to do Break Away Roping, Western Trail, In Hand Trail/Showmanship at Halter. I like to ride with my legs and body - not with my hands.
13. Snaffle eggbut bit. Shank bit for Western comptetition where its required. Note: I do not use a shank bit with the hump in the middle of it. The one I use has a flexible mouth piece that is soft on the mouth like a snaffle.
14. One horse shod, the rest are barefoot (I prefer barefoot)
15. I am 37 years old, and have been around horses most of my life. My real learning has only started since discovering Monty Roberts about 1 year or so ago.

Hello!

1. Stallion, mare or gelding?
Mare
2. How old is the horse?
7
3. Height?
15.3- funny how it only feels huge when you are on them and they start bucking- its a loong way down :/
4. Does your horse live alone or in company to socialize?
she is agisted at a family friends place with a 36 year old gelding.
5. Pasture, paddock or box?
6 acre paddock.
6. Plan land or mountains ?
plain land.

hot, dry, humid and wet in summer and spring, cold and often wet in winter and Autumn. 4 distinct seasons. wouldnt have a clue about the soil. :D it looks like dirt.
8. Do you live with your horse or do you keep him in a stable?
Unfortunately i dont live with my horse currently. I'm hoping we buy some acreage when we move North next year. I currently agist her.
9. How often do you feed ?
I feed generally whenever i go out to visit my horse. I give her a scoop of chaff and a little bran with her minerals. i give her more if she has worked hard though.
10. How often do you work, play or walk with him ?
generally every second day i ride her after school. but in the holidays i ride everyday :)

12. What kind of riding do you practice ?
I ride english, but usually in a stock saddle, because when i got her, Alli would spook at every little thing, so it was safer. she hasnt spooked for a month but i dont quite trust her yet- she used to spook so big even from a walk that she almost unseated me- she would swerve sideways suddenly leaving me horizontal over thin air luckily she always cantered off so i could regain my balance :).
13. What kind of bit ?
Sweet iron egg butt snaffle
14. Shoes or barefoot ?
Shod but only on the front feet and until the two big cracks heal up.
15. How many years of experience with horses?
I learnt to ride on the 36 year old horse a few years ago (not the best experience- he bucked me off 6 times. I only rode him 8 times!) that was when i was 7 or 8- 6 or 7 years ago-(and then i suddenly remembered why i loved horses last year so i started riding again. so probably about 2 years. it feels like longer though because i've loved horses for at least 6 years but probably longer!!

Hello!

just wondering how exactly do you play with your horse?

cristina
Hello!

@caiti.jane
I don't know if the question is directed towards me ?

If yes, this is my answer:

I try to figure out what my horse likes. There are many games and exercises, that develope while being aroud him. For example bringing objects. He started to lift the bucket when he wanted something to eat. So I just pick up the occasion and develope a game. I don't let him do things he does not like.

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed 200 lessons completed 250 lessons completed

1. Stallion, mare or gelding?
4 mares, 2 geldings (1 is a shetland)
2. How old is the horse?
21 years (broken down but still happy), 18, 16, 14, 10, 6
3. Height? 16hands, 15.2, 15.1, 15, 15, 9
4. Does your horse live alone or in company to socialize? 3 mares together in a rented paddoack, mare and gelding together with shetland next to them.
5. Pasture, paddock or box? Pasture and paddock
6. Plan land or mountains ? rented paddock is flat, home paddock is sloping but clean i.e. no rocks or stumps etc. plenty of grass in both areas at present.
7. Climate , seasons and soil? Fairly mild climate, no snow but heavy frosts at times in winter, warm to hot in summer with substantial variation. Summer temperatures can drop from over 40degrees C. down to as low as 15 degrees in less than an hour when a southerly change comes in.
8. Do you live with your horse or do you keep him in a stable? My three youngest horses live on our five acre paddock which I have sub-divided into three paddocks for them. They are shut up in the smaller two paddocks at night where I have built them shelter sheds.
9. How often do you feed ? Once a day - just half a bucket of oaten and lucerne chaff each unless the grass has disappeared then grass hay at night too.
10. How often do you work, play or walk with him ? One is broken down so can't be ridden and one is semi-broken down and only ridden occasionally. Try to ride and/or work with my youngest mare twice a week. They all see me each day for a rub down, a feed or a change of coats. Two are ridden spasmodically - on average about once a fortnight but sometimes either more frequently or less frequently depending on what else is happening in my life.
11. Do you have a roundpen or any other space to work with your horse? I have a fenced off home made menage roughly 50 metres by 25 metres and a smaller yard where I can work them. Currently building a round yard mainly for the shetland.
12. What kind of riding do you practice ? Traditionally just stock saddle riding for stock work - started dressage 15 or so years ago and am still learning!
13. What kind of bit ? Metal training bit - two-jointed (three parts) snaffle bit loose rings and centre egg shaped piece for my young mare, metal snaffle bits for other two horses - soft shaped
14. Shoes or barefoot. One mare is always shod as she is my road riding horse and is ridden on rough gravel roads, she has also had a history of seedy toe so needs shoeing and constant checking. Others are unshod and I trim them myself with my farrier trimming them about every 3rd time - saves money!
15. How many years o experience with horses ? Started riding in the country when I was five. Rode daily (mostly bare back to check rabbit traps in the morinings and bring the cows in in the evenings)until I was 15years old as I did my schooling by correspondence and lived on a property. Continued to ride whenever I was home or whenever I had access to a horse until I was 21 years old. Had 20 years without a horse as I had a full time job with children and lived in cities - only rode spasmodically during this time. Bought my youngest daughter a 15 hand standard bred X quarter horse in 1987 for us to share. Been riding fairly constantly since then (24 years), started dressage in 1996 but mostly ride by myself on the local roads, voluntarily helped numerous neighbours etc re-train problem horses, broke in my first horse and only horse Tricka 2 years ago. Currently still enjoy my rides on the local roads mostly but am training Tricka in dressage so that she maybe one day a Pony Club horse. I try to ride her on average twice a week.
