Introducing Long Reining in a field

Please upload your photo
Hi
I am just looking for some advice on how to start long reining in a field. I have watched the lessons online but I do not have a round pen.

Many thanks
Jacqui

Hi Jacqui & welcome to the Uni. Strictly speaking a round pen isn't necessary but if there are other animals in the field it can be helpful to separate off a corner to work in - I have 4 & they're all nosey so as soon as any equipment/vet/farrier arrives they all crowd in wanting to see what's what & get involved. This is a testament to living without violence but in a practical sense it can be a bit of a nuisance (pushing in & getting tangled up or better still grabbing the leadline & trying their ' hoof at schooling '. Having a dedicated place where you & your horse can concentrate is really helpful. Traditionally, horses were longlined along tracks & paths with the human simply following behind.

You can temporarily fence off a corner of the field to work in using plastic fence posts. I found the netting used on scaffolding is very cheap to buy from a building supplier & is easy to hang. It looks quite substantial but is very light. Plastic fence posts can be extended with light poles (bamboo from a garden centre for example). It's not necessary to spend a fortune or sacrifice an area permanently.

Good luck & remember to keep it fun for both you & your horse! Cheers. Jo.

I've been thinking about the same thing! My round pen is invaded by cactus and I want to start long reining asap.  So I'll try the long reining along a track. thanks.
