I just don't know what goes through some poeples heads?
I recently referred a novice lady on our yard to the Monty Roberts way of doing things, after seeing the result of advice given by a self-proclaimed specialist in difficult behaviours in horses. Not nice and involved excessive/abussive use of the whip around the head amongst other horrible things.
There is another man on the yard who follows (loosley speaking) the teachings of Pat Parelli and now Clayton Anderson ( I have no idea who this is and havn't looked as I have seen what this man does to his horse and it's disgusting) including forcefully backing the horse up on concrete approx 20metres (whilst being on box rest) and smacking it in the face amongst other things.
I have now regrettably stumbled apon this video of a Parelli instructor which is just terrible. This woman personally names Pat Parelli as one of her references on her website. Though, surely even he can't condone this sort of thing?

Monty's ideas are beautifully simple and ANY one can do them, ANY horse can understand them. Yet people still pervert the ideas to meet their own desire to bully and get away with it!
I like to think we're making a difference, but when you see these things being taught to people looking to learn, I just can't help but worry.
Hi, well what an appalling display of useless horsemanship. If you look back at my other posts re: other training methods you will see here a classic example of where I say watch for horses that throw their heads around when being asked to back up - often they have been trained using misapplied Parelli training. I am not a violent person (in fact I have great yellow streak running down the middle of my back!) but if she kicked my boy I'm afraid she would feel my boot swiftly up her backside and flying out the door so high and fast she could consider entering the Grand National!!!!!! By the way, the person you are talking about is Clinton Anderson. You are right, Pat would not in any way condone such behaviour and sadly I know quite a few people who've taken his and other ideas , added a few bits of their own (usually negative!) and call it NH. I have an idea; when we see things like that and they are referring to professional trainers as their mentors/inspiration publicly, we should send their idol the video of what they are doing. Pat/Monty/Clinton etc. can then decide for themselves whether they want their name linking to such trainers. I appreciate these trainers are not stating they are APPROVED by Monty/Pat etc. but I wouldn't want to be linked to anyone who uses violence and then said "Oh my inspiration is Vicci" - no thanks, I would insist that they remove all reference to me as I would never want to 'inspire' someone in this way, if I had inspired them to change, then yes, lovely but otherwise, no. My influence is of course Monty and I would never fear anyone taking a video of photo of anything i do with horses and showing it to him. While it would lead to a lot of things that need improving re: technique and timing etc. I'm sure (!) it would never lead to a criticism of violence and unfair treatment. It is interesting that there was a lot of clouding out of the trainers face - not sure why this is.
Well noted. I have heard mixed things about Parelli, everything from "not too aggressive" to "has very cruel methods". Clayton Anderson tends to be on the "harsh" side.
I have traveled over 3/4 of the world and regrettably have noted that the vast majority, (I'm guessing at 98%?) of horse trainers that I have watched are of the opinion that if any animal is stronger and bigger than they are, they have this preconceived notion (inherent it seems)that brute force and pain are what is needed in order to assert mastery and gain control. Rather than try to understand the animal (horses in this case) and assess their intelligence and psychology. The only thing that seems to be working is to pass on to these people our knowledge and understanding and experience and literally demonstrate how much better a "kind and loving" approach truly is.
The woman in this video is incompetent, dangerous, cruel, callous and utterly useless and malicious. Completely devoid and any animal husbandry skills whatsoever. Someone should to to her exactly what she is doing to that poor horse.
We just have to keep directing people to great sites such as Monty's and others....regrettably there are so few "others".
evito2, I agree with what you're saying, it makes me very angry to see people abusing smart and intelligent creatures!
I havent watched Pat Parreli, but I have watched Clinton Anderson, and in my opinion, he is way too rough with his horses and I wouldnt allow him anywhere near mine. I can see no point in forcing a horse to back up the way he does, or "spanking" it if it misbehaves. It seems to me his horses are rather head shy, and there is no point in that. His horses never look relaxed or happy or like they are having fun. And he is never relaxed. He always seems to be very aggressive. I watched one episode where he was teaching a rider, and told her to spank her horse when it didnt do what she asked immediately. I got so mad watching him that I quit, and turned the channel to something else until he was over. I won't watch him anymore. I won't repeat what my husband said about him. He doesnt seem to espect his horses and certainly doesnt listen to them, to him they are just a tool or something.
I have seen both Parelli and Anderson and Parelli is not so bad he doesn't really use the "Horse Language" like Monty but he does want kindness in the trainers and Anderson is definitely the one trainer I would never allow him near my horse he is way to rough. I also have trained (if you can even call it that) with a lady who said she was a trainer and used a mixture of Parelli and Anderson's ways. She was so rough doing stuff like if my horse even flicked his tail she would uppercut him in the flank or slap his face if he tried to nuzzle her and then would literally yell at me and call me a "Marshmallow" if I wasn't as rough with my horse as she was. My poor horse would even go as far as pushing for a change in his direction to come to me in the middle of her training sessions with him and she would tell me he was "running to Mommy for protection" because he saw me as "Head Mare" and would really spur him and tug his mouth hard if he did this. What was really sad is she is the reason I even bought and started training my horse I had never really had the opportunity to do so before she was around. Regrettably I let these things happen to my horse because I didn't know any better I am VERY GREEN when it comes to training a horse or caring for a horse and she came off like an expert and it wasn't until I saw her hit my horse with the whip right between his ears "To get his attention" that I told her I was done and moved my horse to a new trainer and facility and started watching Monty's videos that I realized how awful she really was. My horse is such a sweet boy and very smart and I only wish I could of started on my own and found this online university in the beginning because I know he would really be spectacular if it wasn't for the stuff she did to him. I have started with join up and he was so calm and so responsive through it and he was never like that when she was handling him he was so jumpy and sadly I didn't know to go off him telling me this woman was not a good person. He is so much better now and I can only see us going up from here! So a big thank you to Monty and I will be telling everyone how wonderful this is!!
Oh dear - these stories are just all too common, it makes me quite sad. I've been there too, when I was still green and didn't know much about horsemanship, and when I think back I feel terrible that I allowed some of these so called trainers anywhere near my horse. But you live and learn, all we can do is to keep spreading the word and hope that Monty's influence inspires people to change for the better.
The number one reason that I see in the area that I live for people not believing that Monty's stuff actually works is fear. They fear admitting that they have been wrong all of this time. They also fear the fact that horses are intelligent and will work for you only if they wish to. For many people that I have seen they cannot face these fears, therefore will never change their ways, much to my displeasure and the expense of many unfortunate horses.
Thank you all for the replies. Clayton Anderson sounds awful, though given what this man is like I'm not surprised he would have opted for methods like his, as mentioned earlier this man quite clearly enjoys bulling his horse. Its a jittery thoroughbred type as it is and all he has created is a horse that tip toes around, lunges at other horses when they walk past and goes completely mental when he knows he's done something wrong for fear of the consequences.
Interesting that you said that Viccihh1 I emailed a link to the address mentioned on the parelli site and no-one has gotten back to me.
Hi evito
What part of the world are you in? Might be easier to find a local contact
I think I must be being a bit dim, I've looked at it again and can't find any detals of who she is or her website for me to look at re: mention of Parelli, can you give me a link Ev please?
