Last night (Jan 11th 2014) the local sheriff brought in this poor bay mare. They toke the little arab from her owner do to neglect. This poor girls teeth are SO bad she can not put her lips together and worse of all eat or drink. She is very under weight and has no muscles tone. I have posted a video of her. warning her teeth are very graphic. I just can't see what could have caused her teeth to grow like that unless she was abused.

Is it an under shot jaw thats not had appropriate dental care?
This just takes my breath away, how good she's in safe hands now and let's hope there is some remedy to help this poor mare!
Let us know how thing develope!
Good luck,
Miriam
Beryl, its not Parrot Mouth also known as Under shot jaw. She had her first vet check today. The vet says it looks to be that he was ether in an accident or was kicked in the mouth. And was never cared for. Not really knowing here to start in her treatment. We did some poo testing. She is positive for internal parasites. Vet said she has heavy intestinal perquisites and needs to be on an aggressive treatment.

I toke her out of the holding pen today to stretch her legs and she is a topical Arabian. She has a wonderful prance/trot. She has the will and fight to live, which we are so happy to see. She sometimes gets a little to excited and wants to stop on me. I tried to put my dully on her sadly do to her mouth and teeth it caused to much pain. SO I just put my big rope halter on her. It still makes me so mad seeing how someone could do this to such a beautiful mare.
Poor girl, she must have been in so much pain, I'm so glad she has now found you.
Oh my God, poor girl, i'm so glad she's got you now Bless her.
Her back teeth are probably so sharp & tearing into her cheeks at the moment too.
Arabs are wonderful horses, many people say they don't like them as they're so sharp, but yes, you have to be on your toes with them to appreciate them, they are very intelligent & hardy too. Sometimes the horse is a lot quicker that the owner & there lies the problem!
Has the vet given you any idea what can be done for her teeth?
We are meting with some specialist on her teeth to get some ideas as to what can be done. They are saying right now that they can be cut down a little but will always be crooked. Still working on ideas as to how to approach them though.

Today Bell is doing wonderful. Her flame of life is burning nice and hot. Today for her walk all she wanted to do was run run run. She has quite a spirit in her. We will have video later today of her during her walk time. Although It is turning in to more of a run as fast as I am allowed to time. She is such a funny girl. After running on the long lines she will stop and walk up to Christy her handler and with the look on her face of "Ok, Im done how what should we do." We are so happy to see that she is willing to fight for life.
She sounds wonderful, i look forward to seeing the video.
I'm sure she'll manage very well if they can shorten her teeth with your help. What is she able to eat at the moment?
hi thunderfoothorsetraining,
Happy to read you're going to be able to give her some relief from the dental problem!
Since she might be very aware of the need of dental care, maybe you can start touching her teeth incrementally, one step after the other, using the Dually seems no option right now.
Do you feed her mash? To be running like you describe she needs the energie to do so...
I know the arabian temper, they can be a handful, but with good breathing from the handler and most of all a good sense of fun and humor, I find them very good to handle. Could you give her some toy or something she can play with , like a huge ball, in her paddock? This way she can build up her condition at her own pace and learn to enjoy life again.
I don't think you mentioned her age, but she sounds still very playfull.
Keep the good work going!
Miriam
Hello everyone. Belletnica is eating a mash mix at the moment with supplements and vitamins added. She does get alfalfa hay loose pack flakes that she can pick through. Right now her pen is 24 feet by 24 feet so we don't have any toys for her right now. She is 27 year old. She is very playful and a handful at times. We are not using the Dually due to her mouth at this current time. She is being handled in a large rope halter. This still allows us to control her but not hurt her mouth. She is beginning to let us tough her nose and upper lip but not for very long. But she is doing very good.
You are doing her very well, it will take time to touch her nose & mouth & you are taking it at her pace. She may well have to stay on soft mask feeds i would think, but who knows what her back teeth are like until the vet's done what they can.
My 11hh Welsh pony had lost 14 teeth by the time i lost her at approx 39 years old & she managed very well. The problem she had right from when i got her was her front teeth had worn away & she was unable to bite of hay, she used to use her hoof to stand on it to break it off; this didn't affect her grazing at that time.
There is a much greater range of suitable feeds that you can soak down to make a mash now than there was then so she can get all the vitamins & minerals she needs to be healthy.
Miriam, you are so right about Arabs, you do need a sense of humor with them, if you do, they are wonderful, but if you want to be total control all the time & don't have a sense of fun - don't have one haa haa
sounds terrible :( luckily she has found someone who can help :) Unfortunatly neglect and malnutrition happens to billions of horses all over the world. I have been to a place north of perth in western australia where i only was able to rescue 4 horses out of over 40 horses on 10 acres of land, all terribly underweight and 19 of them died of lack of food and water, its horrible to go to these types of places, the man just didnt know how to look after them and thought that they were dying of diseases, not malnutrition because he thought that they were fine and healthy, and that they find their own nutrition. but its obvious they dont. the rspca and second chance horse rescue got into the situation but they were too late for the 19 that had already gone, the stallion we wanted to rescue had just passed after we rescued our 4 :( RIP gorgeous ones <3
Hi Help, well done for your commitment to rescuing these poor horses, it's so sad isn't it!
