I was traveling on a borrowed horse from one farm to an other at the Tarahumara Mountains, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, it was about an eight hour trip, the horse had been on this trail many times and I didn't and there are many trails that go to different places and I didn't know which was the right one. I remembered that the horse knew the right one so I let the rains hang on it's neck with out even touching it. As the horse was walking with me half asleep on it, I saw a trail that we passed to the right about 40 degree angle. I thought the horse passed it because it wasn't the right trail but a few minutes later the horse did a sudden stop, lifted up his head with his ears to the front looking straight ahead and bent his neck to look back as if he was saying; did I pass it or I am not there yet? about three times. When he realized he had passed it, took a short cut through the woods and rocky terrain to the right trail. I still laugh and if I feel home sick i also cry at the same time as i recall this scene. My question is, was he asleep while walking?

I don't think a horse can walk sleeping. They are a lot better than us to find the way back because of they have a better sens of smell and a better memory and sense of orientation than us. But they can get distracted by avoiding something and take a wrong turn. Then get lost for a little and have to find his way back traveling off road and using his senses to guide him.
