Horses that avoid dewormer

Please upload your photo 100 lessons completed
I had a horse that avoided the dewormer syringe and would throw his head to avoid getting it in his mouth. The best trick I had was cutting an apple, pulling seeds out of pockets, and injecting the dewormer into the pockets. As long as he didn't split the apple chunk too early I could get most of it in, but there has to be a better way to get there.

Hi & welcome to the Uni. I have 4 guys & only 1 readily accepts wormer or injections or teeth rasping. He is Max, a 19 year old welsh A who has cushings. For years I struggled to get him to take his medication - seems to taste pretty bad. However, he takes his Prescend pill quite readily if I put the pill in an old wormer syringe ( having made sure it's cleaned out - through the dishwasher ) with icing sugar & water - pill dissolves in water. The other 3, who are welsh x Irish cob all shake their heads, then nod reapedly & Holy Moley, the mare, then puts her muzzle in the back of my knee so there is no way I can reach her mouth. Thing is, Humphrey & Holy Moley have almost always past a worm test - Moley went 3 years with really low worm egg counts. Perhaps your horse is trying to tell you he doesn't need wormer. Given that there is an issue with resistance to wormers I suggest you have his droppings tested & only worm him when necessary. Train using a syringe, icing sugar & water - he will love it! Monty uses honey but it's very sticky stuff & icing sugar is cheaper. Actually, you can make icing sugar by running granulated sugar through a food processor which is cheaper still. Good luck & let us all know how you get on. Cheers, Jo.

Hi all,  my 31 year old mare takes her Prascend simply pushed into a 1/6 slide of apple - she looks every morning for that apple!  Great tips from Jo as usual! Egg counts will also help us prevent resistance in the worm population and preserve our treatments for the future.  Like Monty does with the honey lesson for bitting - something good tasting then the treatment then something good tasting after.  Good luck! Hi. Max started off accepting his pill in a carrot slot, until he didn't. We moved to a piece of Apple. That worked - until it didn't. Then we tried a marmite soldier ( a strip of bread with salty marmite - very good for extra vitamins, folded over the pill which worked, until it didn't. The instructions for medicating prascend suggest a syringe with treacle which I didn't try because I think that would be ultra messy but icing sugar & water definitely works & I don't have to spend ages pursuing Max around the field to give it to him. However, he usually turns down the offer of a mint either before or after his medication - very lovely but 'strange' boy! Cheers, Jo.
