Hey everybody, I love this uni and I love what Monty does. It interests me soo much and i'm soo desperate to actually put it into practice, but very unfortunately I do not have a horse nor access to a horse (somebody else's) that I can do things with... :(
Does anybody else have this problem or used to have this problem? If it's 'used to' then how did you fix it? At the moment I cannot buy my own horse, and soon (in about a month?) I will have the opportunity to start helping out two people with their own horses, but i'm not sure I will be able to do much with them (or at least one of them)... I sure hope so though! I am just dying to do something! :D
One of the horses is a dressage horse on his way to the top and his owner is a very nice girl who is quite busy with him, so I don't think i'll be able to do much with him. The other horse is owned by another really nice girl who, in fact, is also aware of Monty's methods, and she's not as a serious rider as the other girl, so I think I will be able to do more things with her and her horse! It'll be really fun if we can do stuff together! :)
So, what do you guys think?/Anything to say? :)

Hi Linda, I don't have a horse either, and can't afford one yet. :(
Good luck with it LindaR. I am sure you are aware that it is a huge responsibility working with someone else's horse when you are not fully experienced. It is great that these two people are willing to let you help with their horses. Hope it all works out.
Hi Linda :)
I had to have my mare put down in January this year due to a badly broken leg and thus found myself horseless for the first time in twenty years. A very weird feeling!
So for three months (including when I joined here) I was without an equine :( So I can relate to your frustration. All this new knowledge and no where to practice it!
I'm not in a finacial position atm moment to buy a mount for myself as such so, I bought two minis (it was meant to be one, but i cam home with two hehe). They only eat as much as one medium sized horse between them, so day to day up keep is cheaper, but everything else is the same.
That's great that you have access to some horses. Have you considered volenteering at your local riding club/endurance club as a strapper? You may not be able to practice Monty's methods in full, but you will be around horses gaining invaluable experience and knowledge and you may very well even get the opportunity to ride.
And there is the added bonus of probably finding like-mind horse people who are Monty Roberts fans too.
Horse addict: it's a real bummer, isn't it?
.
MaggieF: thank you and yes I know :) I've done it before, but unfortunately it was before I found out about Monty so I never got to try any of his concepts with the horse I took care of :/
.
Rahni: I'm so sorry for your loss :( Yes I do actually volunteer at my local stables, but unfortunately that only includes working during the holidays because that's the only time when there aren't regular lessons going on so that there will actually be something for me to do.. Summer holiday is the best time to help out here because that's when there is the least going on meaning that I can do the most :D I can't wait for the summer! Last summer was a huuuge boost in my riding skill and general skill of handling horses since I got to spend a month helping out practically daily, and doing a lot of longing and riding between 1 and 3 times a day! It was amazing! But you're right: I didn't get to practice Monty's methods much...
Yes, it is Linda.
Linda, just to warn you, if you are going to work with these horses, you should have an instructor beside you for safety, that's what Monty recommends!
Hello all,
I to, do not have a horse yet. It's very frustrating not to have your own horse to work with. I have had the oppertunity to work with a local trainer on my riding skills a bit, but she is very anti Monty! I told her I wanted to get more comfortable around horse's feet and mouth, but all she did was show me how to pick them up and clean them. She had me try one time then that was it. Like I really feel comfortable after just one time. That's one reason I was happy to be able to sign up for Horsemanship 101.
In about 5 months I should be able to get my horse. Than I can Join-up with my own horse.
Hi dorthy,
Don't get too discouraged.
I'm surprised that your trainer is not allowing you to tack the horse yourself.
The stable that I ride at always has this as part of the student's training.
Everything, getting the horse from the stall to tacking them up and leading them to the arena, everything. Most stables do this as far as I know. It's part of the instruction/lesson.
The ultimate goal is for you to be able to handle and be comfortable around a horse.
Is it possible to go to another stable? You might be happier.
Also, they may be impressed if you say you are a member of a university and your coarses are on horse training. Then gradually introduce it as Monty Roberts. Remember Monty has many guests on here as well and you can mention them as well.
This way they will see you are being exposed to many methods, all non-violent with the horse's best interest at heart.
Over the years I have found on profound question usually works in getting a two way conversation going, try to ask, "why". And listen very carefully to her answer, do not interupt, let her get it all out of her system, nod now and then to show you are listening. When she is finished very professionally explain what your goal is.
Hope this helps,
Ronda
Whenever I have a lesson, I'm always grooming and tacking the horse myself.
I think I'm lucky too to ride at a stables that allow you to do the stuff yourself! But then again, i am at a high level? I think they even let the little kids do it on their own though (but they help them if they need help of course), and it's nice because like this you learn how to handle the horse and tack up and groom and other basics yourself! We even get to shower the horses ourselves in the summer :)
Hi Linda,
I too am not able to afford owning a horse-but as my lucky day would have it- Ther was a wonderful horse baoarding at our barn whose owner was having financial difficulties and thought she might have to sell or move her horse to a different barn. the bar owner was aware of my situation- my desire to own, but unable to finance- she connected me to boarder and now I pay half the board and have full access to her wonderful horse; unless the owner's daughter wants to ride- then i schedule. But i did a lot of my Monty work with this horse- we are both the better for it.
let people know your desire and your situation may change..
Also, you should always tack up the horse you are riding it is a brilliant learning opportinity...
Good luck
Richandi
Hi Richandi!
Wow that sounds great! I'm really happy for you! You get half a horse to yourself :D I hope I soon get access to a horse like this too so that I can finally put Monty's work to practice :)
I shall do my best to make it happen, and in the meantime, have lots of fun with your horse!
Oh and yes, I do always tack up and groom my own horse :)
Linda
(just to clarify: by 'my own horse' I mean the horse I'm riding for that particular lesson which changes all the time)
I just got some bad news :( the dressage girl I wanted to help out with is pretty busy so I won't really be able to, and the other girl's horse isn't coming here after all :(
SIGH.
