Hard mouthed Puller

Hello! 100 lessons completed

I would like to be able to watch Mr Roberts demonstrate how to re-educate a horse who is a puller (from previous owners) to encourage the horse to be more generous and respond to light signals to have a better partnership with an older horse (7 years old).AJHoney

Hi
What my trainer does is go back to basics and starts them over in a bosal also known Asa hackamore you could also try a butlers bridle
Once you have you horse going in a collective fashion put back his bit if it is a snaffle or a very mild curb bit like a grazing bit. Just hang the bit in his mouth with no reins and keep the bozal on to ride one thing that Monty does is us honey on the bit so the horse mouths it slowly reintroduce the bit until you no longer need the bozal this is how the Spanish train horses as well as the casters of California most horses pull or become hard mouthed from too strong hands or a harsh bit Make sure the bit fits him and does not pinch the corners of his mouth. The more commands you give wig you legs and seat the less you will need the reins Be patient and gentle with you commands using the bit the happier you horse will be

Good luck and hope this helps you

Cheers

Hello!

Thanks Denise, thats helpful info.
I agree about the harsh bit, i have had zak a year now and he has come on leaps and bounds but the guy i bought him had him in a gags all of the time, even worse than that he learn to ride on him(from scratch!!!) so i think my poor boy has had to toughen up

Lola,

I would ride him in the Dually for a month or so and give his mouth a break. Then go back to using a snaffle. You can work with him from the ground or the saddle with the Dually to get him soft to the cues again, so that when you transition back, he will have a better understanding of what you want and that it won't hurt. And remember to use only what pressure you need to get the response you want, then release. Don't assume that the next time you need that same amount of pressure--always give him the lightest of cues to start with, to give him the chance to respond lightly. It'll take time but I'm sure you can do it. Good luck!

During the last three days we have been able to calm a "pulling" horse in two steps. First: Join-Up, follw-up and Dually training on the ground. The horse learned the rule to not pass me. Second (two trainers): I walked in front of the horse, the second trainer in the saddle behind.
