I would like to learn more about teaching young and not so young but inexperienced horses all those things that they need to learn on the ground so that they learn it peacefully without becoming remedial horses.
For example how to teach a horse to tie, is it the same way as teaching a remedial horse to not pull back?
How about getting just one horse out of the field when they all want to come with you? When you do a join up with a horse they are now looking at you as lead mare in a way. How do you get just one when they are all begging to join you.
We saw stop, forward, backup on the the lead line. I would imagine that turning both ways from the ground is the same, am I correct? What if you want to lead the horse from the other side? Do you just duplicate the process just like you would with training to saddle from both sides?
Does anyone else have any ideas of these what I suppose seem like obvious questions?
I volunteer at a horse rescue and we have over 120 horses and they all need to learn ground manners. Very few of these horses have been formally worked with as they are PMU or Nurse Mare babies. They have been petted and brushed and loved. Fortunately the Nurse Mare babies are not hand raised.
I have come light years with my mare already combining my experience with horses and the help I get her and from Monty's books. I still feel like I have so much to learn so that when we find homes for these horses they will have the best chance possible. The best way I can do that is to give them the opportunity to learn that what we humans want them to do is not a horrible and scary thing. I would like to get as many of these horses as solid as possible in the basics so that when it does come time to learn to be ridden, or go to a new home, or what ever. They are as confident as flight animals can be.
