Hi everyone. I was going through forum posts this morning and came upon a note for a book on feeding, it was about natural herbs and things to add to a horses diet to keep them healthy shiny and fly resistant (ok maybe not) Unfortunately I didn't write the name down and now I cant find it. I think Maggie had the name but not sure. I would love to look into this further, can you let me know some good references. Thanks!

"A Modern Horse Herbal"
Written by: Hillary Page Self
Works for me, don't know if its the one you are looking for though.
Thank you. I'll look into it. Much appreciated.
Just a quick addition, Avon Skin So Soft (SSS) 3 or 4 water to 1 part SSS works great as a fly/bug repellant. Good for skin as well.
Thank you for the tip, I have that it does notwork as well as I hoped, and my one mare, she has such fun with fly spray...as in nope don't want it! walk away, run away, talk to the butt..haha She loves to mess with me. This year I am trying fly predators. I really wanted the info for nutrition and supplements for both girls..difficulty, one is 24 and one is 5 so different needs.
Looked at a Modern Horse Herbal, not what I was looking for but I'm going to buy it when in stock. Good reference, and as I use herbal remedies for me why not my girls.
Thank you
Paula
I have found Rose-hip to be a fantastic addition to my horses diet. I have used it on 25 yr old arthritic thoroughbreds, high strung 5 year old standardbreds and now feed it to my 2 yr old quarterhorse. It is a natural antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and is great for keeping their coat shiny and healthy. Due to these properties it is great for helping them to heal after an injury and to ease uncomfortable joints. I was able to take my thoroughbred back into the show ring for my beginner walk trot classes and it has been wonderful with my new baby with his "silly moments".
Unfortunately in all the years I've had horses I've yet to find a decent fly repellent :)
Thanks Denea - I purchased rose hip in a powder form awhile ago but haven't really used it yet so now I will start. Do you use the powder or the syrup form?
Powder and only about a tablespoon a day. I'll double that if they are injured though just to give a boost :D
Thanks Denea that's an easy one... I hope definitely going to try it.
Does author Pat Colby ring a bell. I was on a quest for info this morning and found a holistic herb and health tot horses book. Anyone read her? Also found a great site called Natural Horse Thereapys. Great articles there.
Your welcome :)
There are numerous good books available on horse nutrition and diet. I know I was concerned about Nicky developing a grass belly last summer so checked the internet out so I could have mentioned a book that was interesting I would have to check back to be able to give you author and title.
If you have time I'd appreciate it.
Yes, I will try to do so as soon as possible.
