Has anyone recently taken their prelim cert exams (or is about to take them)? I'm still pegging my way through the HUGE manual and 'From My Hands To Yours' (again) as well as doing practical practice and I think I'm doing ok so far. Just wondering if anyone knows how in-depth the written exams will be and what sort of format they will take (essays/multiple choice/q&a) - if you're allowed to say that is!
Best of luck to everyone going through the same thing x

Hi Tessa,
I'm currently studying for my Introductory Exams which will be in December - I agree with you that the manual is HUGE! I feel ok about the practical part, but the theory exam scares me a bit considering how much is in the manual. I guess all I can do is try and study it and hope that it sinks in before the exams!
Good luck with it all.
Ruth
Sounds really overwhelming!
Thanks guys, so glad to hear I'm not the only one finding it daunting! I have no idea what sort of detail I'm supposed to be going into with it (ie should i be memorising pharmaceutical names for laminitis cures? aaa). Ruthy, are you hoping to go to Flag is up next year?
Hi you brave ones!
I did my Intro Exam this April and stayed for the Advanced Course.
The written part is quite good, since you can choose from several topics, only some are obligatory. If you know a lot about one topic, you can gain good notes on that and leave out another that is not so into your focus. Still it takes two afternoons of writing, no doubt about it, that you need to be well prepared, anatomy etc. has to be there.
It is true, that the manual is huge and you need to work your way through it several times to get an overview.
The in-text-questions help, still they don"t cover it all.
"You are not alone" is written at the end of Anatomy, let this be of comfort to you! You"ll make it if you prepare yourself well....
Miriam
Hi everyone, would you mind answering a stupid question for me.
What are these exams?
Ronda
Hi all,
I like to know as well where you are talking about.
And uh... Ronda... it isn't a stupid question.
"Stupid questions don't excist, it is more stupid not to ask".
Cheers, May
Hello Ronda and May :-)
.
Firstly, the only silly question is the one you don't ask, so don't worry about that. You are among friends :-)
.
The exams they are talking about here are the ones that go with Monty's Introductory Horsemanship Course. Commonly referred to as "the Intro Course".
.
If you want to go on to do the Advanced Course, you have to complete and pass the Intro Course Exams. There is a practical component and a written component to the exam.
.
Good luck Tessa :-) I am hoping to be able to do mine in December with Ruth, but I may have to wait until next year because of work commitments.
.
I am loving the Manual. And I think Miriam is right, you definately have to read it over a few times to get the complete picture.
.
See you later,
.

OK, where does one get these exams and how does one apply for them?
What prerequests must one have to be eligable to take them?
And finally, what is the purpose of them?
I have not heard of these and am always interested in furthering my education with horses.
Thank you,
Ronda
Hi Mejestic,
There are 38 Certified Monty Roberts Instructors all over the world and they are all qualified to run the two week Introductory course and run exams, issuing the Introductory Certificate in MR horsemanship.
There are no pre-requisites. The purpose is to deepen one's knowledge of Monty's principles and, if interested, to go onto America to pursue becoming a MR Instructor.
If you go the Certified Instructors list on the website, you will probably find one in your country.

Laira
Tessa, good timing!
I am just about to email the class of July 2011 about the next set of Intro exams in April. They will take place in Ireland over Easter.
Regarding the level of detail required for the Intro level written exams, the Psychology part of the manual + From my hands to yours will form the majority of the exam. If you focus on these two things, you should be in a strong position.
Laira
Hi All,
Laira so good to hear fron you, I read your paper comparing Monty's techniques to psychology and gleened a great deal of insight fron it. I woudl recommend you post the link so others can enjoy it.
I am planning to take my examnext year, largly due to work commitments. I am really enjoying the process of learning Monty's consepts. They insights come in small peices ususally after a join-up or longlining sessions but I am able to apply it thenext time around.
I hightly recommend anyone to do the Intro Course,if time and finances available, it gives the Uni lessons so much more depth.
Good Luck to all going forward in your studies.
I hope to meet some of you at the Exams next year.

Thanks so much to everyone for replying to my little post, it's been really helpful. Miriam, thanks for the advice about the format & Laira, thank you for the exam date being April! I was panicking about January... perhaps I can calm down with the trying to memorise medical terms so frantically.
To those who were asking about what these exams are for, go on a preliminary certificate course if you can! It was such a memorable two weeks; some of the best hands-on learning I've ever had the chance to gain and I encountered some of the most open-minded, conscientious and generally fascinating people I've ever met in my life.
Good luck everyone!
I'm taking the intro course in june and the exam in september...I was just wondering how the exams are graded? is it pass/fail or are there different grades? dis it necessary to obtain a certain grade to proceed to the advanced course? thanks!
Hi Brynhildr,
To start with the grading, it is pass or fail.
I just want to let you know that the time between your course and your exam seems to be quite short, most people need more or less a year, especially for the theoretical part.
Depending on your fore-knowledge you could ofcourse shorten this, but you also need time for the videos you'll send in, before you'll be invited for the exam.
I hope this answers your question, have a great time at your course!
Miriam
