Take a look at the lesson on Mounting Blocks. At least it would be a starting point for you. Good luck
Cheers!
Hi Alan,
And also the lesson with the dually halter, standing still.
Read also the lesson.
Good luck, May.
Hi Alan young,
In the series "Fix-up"-videos Monty has a special issue on mounting and standing still.
These videos are still for sale, even when made in 2001, probably on DVD now.
I'm sure you'll find a solution with your ex race horse using the suggestions on the videos.
Good luck,
Miriam
Hi Alan
.
Miriam is correct, the Fix-Up series is available now on DVD. I have this set of DVDs and they are great! They cover a number of topics which you will no doubt find very useful.
.
You will need a Dually Halter and a friend to do what Monty shows you on his DVD for helping the horse that wont stand still while his rider mounts.
.
You can get them from the Monty Roberts Online Shop.
.
See you later,

Hi again,
.
The other thing I find very effective when training a horse to stand still while I get on is to just sit there for a few minutes once I sit in the saddle. Don't just get on and ride off straight away.

Thanks so much for all your help, I'll try this out and tell you how I get on!
Also, asking for a backwards step before riding forward helped a lot.
I've got a lovely ex-racer too, one of the main reasons I joined the online uni was because I saw the mounting block video and it has completely transformed my horse from just doing some of the simple things suggested. She was very much used to charging off as soon as your foot was in the stirrup then throwing a wobbler if she was made to stand, the thought doesn't even cross her mind now!
I would certainly love to see more on re-training ex-racers specifically. The basics are covered beautifully by alot of the videos but a more specialised series like training and ER for jumping or dressage would be a wonderful addition!
I agree,
we live close to a racing community and they are constantly selling "unacceptable" racers for almost nothing.
I have never owned one and am a bit weary to try. They are huge compared to me.
I was watching H&C TV, Kelly Marks is an ex-jocky and explains why they move when mounted, they're trained to do this.
They can be re-trained and she said it's not for everyone. After watching the series, I don't think it is for me.
I'm so happy Monty's method has helped you.
Hope everything continues to go well for you.
Hi All, Yes, you do find a great video on the Horse & Country TV with an ex race horse actually! Klick on to the website www.horseandcountrytv.co.uk and search monty roberts and kelly marks! Many race horses have passed through our farm and I have been in the "jockey business" as well - the horses need your help to understand how to stand still for the mount, most trainers have them walking when getting the jockey up,
