There is German trainer who is called Michael Geitner. He has published some books. His training method bases on the one of Monty but is somehow different. He has created a modified Dually halter without noseband and a piece of plastic instead of the rope on the nose. I tried it in some horses. I found it unstable and could not find any advantage.

Why would anyboidy want to change something thaat seems, sounds and I am sure is an excellent tool? It is like when Hollywood insists on re-making European films, they always suck.
Christy
My two cents?
If it isn't broken, don't fix it! ;)
The Dually is patented in anticipation of people trying to make a poorer model with inferior materials. Monty thought it through and made it excellent.
Dear friends.
I would like to come back on the subject from a technical part of view.
Having used the Dually in many different (European) horses I sometimes have the impression that the training rope over the nose is too long and slips too far down, irritating the horse, even if the part under the chin is in the shortest position possible. Any similar experience?
Rudi
Yes. I think it could be a bit shorter, otherwise, its great. And I agree with everyone, if it aint broke, don't fix it.
Hi Rudi,
my experience is that, when the Dually is the proper size and fitted exact, the trainingrope is not too long. Even with Arabians, who have a elegant nose compared to the size of the cheeks, I find shortening the length ( over the poll) solves any problem. I wouldn't want the noseband to be shorter! Young horses sometimes try to snap the ring at the side of their mouth, but shortening the overall length does the trick.
I don't know the Geitner-halter, have only seen pictures of it, and read articles about Michael Geitner being Monty's greatest fan, until he decided to become his own "Monty". The leather noseband seems OK, as I said never used it.
Miriam
I am with Miriam. It fits my horses perfectly and I certainly can't see how it could be improved. Pleased it is patented!
Hi Rudi, yes, i've found the rope long & it does drop down in a neutral position, but in use it sits at the correct level; I can't see how it can be shorter as it would end up too short when the Dually is used on it's largest size.
I did all my mares early training in the Dually & found it good for early riding, however, having gone back to riding her in it from a bit, the rope is too long to give clear instructions, so changed to a bitless bridle.
The Dually rope over the nose is very effective, but the noseband itself is the part that is adjusted to "fit" the horses head, that is where the stability comes in.
It's only when you put your ideas into reality that you can see where the flaws are!
Monty's Dually is by far the best traning tool i've come across in 45 years of handling horses.
Thanks for the answers.
Miriam: The Geitner halter is much more instable than the original Dually. Shortening too much the part of the Dually over the poll can cause an irritation of the distal end of the zygomatic bone.
Beryl: good argument about the maximum size. I am usually in the third hole of the noseband (black, medium size halter). There is no doubt that Dually is an excellent training tool. However modifications are always possible.
Rudi
If it is patented shouldn't the modifications only be made by Monty and his team? Could you respond to this query Debbie?
Thank you for asking, Maggie. It is acceptable to modify your own halter yes. Monty often says that there is overlap through every size and lots of different head shapes to adjust to. He suggests that if you need more holes, take a heated ice poker and burn another where you need it, sealing the materials as you do it so it won't unravel. The brass crimp at the rolled noseband is made to be possible to adjust but needs to be crimped again tightly after adjusting. Hope that helps.
Rudi, i have a tip for you; what i do with my Dually is have a small loop of velcro (hook & Loop tape) around the noseband & training rope, when I'm not using the rope, i slide it to the middle, so it holds up the rope, when I'm using the rope, i slide it to one end so it doesn't interfere - works well without having to alter the rope length.
Thanks Debbie for responding to my query but the Geitmar halter sounds as if it has been modified and then sold commercially. How can this happen under the patent agreement?
Hi Rudi, somtimes with horses that are inbetween sizes I have found the red one on a larger setting better than the black one on a smaller setting if the horse has a small nose area that makes the rope too long - just a thought :-)
MaggieF, presumably, it's not actually being sold as a modified Dually, there's many different training halters & halters in general about, so the Geitmar just isn't a Dually! If i did actually find the right picture, it's just a headcollar with a loose nose piece - no real resemblance other than it goes on the horses head!!!!
If headcollars in general were patented,(which they are not) i wouldn't be able to make them, but most headcollars run to the same pattern as do bridles & saddles.
Interesting to read!
My noseband seems to have stretched with use over the years. It certainly wasn't too long to start with, but today it is hanging too far down when "relaxed".
Thanks Beryl for clearing that up. Don't think they are sold in Australia. The dually is certainly the best training aid that I have ever tried.
Dually Fan here also! beryl & vicci - UK thanks for the tips, that just might come in handy. My guy fits in the Red Dually on some days and the Black Dually on others. I have been wondering if it was me or do others have this issue.
http://www.shop.montyroberts.com.au/ Here is another source of Dually's in Australia.
Hi Amberpony, it might just be a case of making sure the throat latch part is pulled up over the back of the jaw with the smaller one.
Dear all. Thank you very much for the different ideas and contributions.
Rudi
beryl, Pretty sure it is how much the halter is stretched out that day. They seems to go back into shape when you get them soaking wet. The black one gets to big at times. The red one's nose rope is to short at times. Kinda a catch 22. ha ha ha
I purchased the Black Dually Used and put extra holes in it before Joey grew. Ordered the Red Dually to get a better fit after reading a Dually Thread here on the Uni.
