It would be awesome if there was a certification course offered in Canada. Maybe through the certified instructor Tommy D. He should be qualified to teach and certify here in Canada. I love the fact that we get a certificate from the University for our accomplishments. I have been a member of the University for 4 years but cannot afford to go to take the courses in the USA. I would love to be able to be certified as a Monty Roberts method instructor.

Hi Shiney Girl, 4 years on the Uni, well done. So much for us to learn.
I too wish to become a certified instructor, but financially it's a long way off. For now I continue learning and applying everything to do with natural horsemanship in helping not only my horses but other horses too that have remedial issues.
Hope you make it one day!!

You should check with Tommy about that. I think he can do a lot of the courses. You may have to go down south to do the advanced course.
Hi Shiney Girl I agree ... I wish there were more locations in Canada where we could train. Alberta is a long way from here.
Hi, I spoke to Tommy about courses as he's just a few hours from where I am and he can do a couple of them and very reasonable in price and flexible. I plan to do one up as soon as I can fit it in.
that's great Karen, but can he actually certify anyone as an instructor from Monty Roberts? Let me know when you plan to go. I can try to arrange my schedule to go with you and we could do it together. I am located in Lashburn, Lloydminster area.
Hi Shiney Girl, yes he can do the introductory course which is 2 weeks plus the course work. http://www.tommydurocher.com/content/horse-training
Not sure if you've seen his website but I here's a link to it. I'm in Prince Albert so not too far up the road, I'll let you know when I'm looking at going - could be fun :)
Just to clarify...the Introductory COurse does not mean you are an Instructor. To be an Instructor you have to complete the Advanced AND the three month internship; both of these can only be done at Flag is Up.
Sorry, just meant to say what courses he can do not that he can certify to be and instructor.
I would love to do the same here in N.B.Canada,become an instructor of Monty's ways. I just fell upon this one day about a couple of weeks ago and am taking his online courses. I am enjoying them so much.My husband says I am working to hard at it. I say I would work even harder if I had the time. I have finished 83-85 lessons.Had horses before and that was at least 25 yrs ago. Am going to start a herd here in a short while and will be applying all these lessons in time.I know I can do it because I have a strong desire to. Have had since I was a young girl, only wish I could have tried while I was younger, going ahead anyway.
Hi rumble.
I too am in New Brunswick, Canada. Would love to have an instructor come here to work with Star.
My health is pretty bad and she needs to be worked. She loves,it.
She's half Arabian and 7 now. I've had her since she was 6 months old. Rescued her. Love that horse!!!!
Because of my health we have been thinking of selling her but my it is so difficult to make that decision! She is part of our family.
Hi Ronda,
So sorry to read your health is not good!
Before you decide to sell Star, realise how important she is for your happiness and with that for your life!
Maybe you could find someone to work with Star on a regular basis, so you can keep her near you and still have the benefits of your deep connection? It wouldn't have to be a Certified Instructor in Monty's concepts, but someone who is familiar with them and respects your choice of handling her according to those concepts.
It's good to have you back on the forum, please stay in contact with us!
All the best,
Miriam
Hi, Miriam. Yes its been a long time talking to you. I love my horse so much.
Each year my health gets worse and I say I have to find a gentle buyer for her. But I have to tell that is not easy.
Star has come so far and matured into a beautiful calm and well mannered mare.
We had to board her at a farm, two years ago, and that turned out to be a disaster.
The owner was using her as a teaching horse the children loved her and Star loves to be groomed. They only had to touch a leg and say pickup and Star would do that for them.
I would see Star everyday, it was just down the road from us.
For some reason the owner of the barn decided she was going to put a heavy Western saddle on Star, no permission was given for this.
One of the other boarders told me of this occurance. The young women cross-tied Star threw the saddle on Stars back, Star was stunned but did not move. The young women then processed to do this 38 times in a row.
At this point Star was hysterical and screaming. The fellow boarder looked on in horror as my mare was frightened to death.
The fellow boarder felt she had to tell me. But there was no need. After this happened I knew something was very wrong.
Star would not come to me or my husband. When she was in the stall she would cower in a corner white eyed.
It was the middle of winter so much snow everywhere. My husband snow plowed her pen out we brought her home and when she stepped into her stall she let out a big sigh.
The fellow boarder took her warm blood out of there as well.
In the past two years we have been earning her trust again to allow the saddle near her.
We know persistence and patience is the key. Workman, friends and neighbours say she is amazing and very clever.
Our reason for boarding her was because my husband had a serious accident at work and was not able to help me at the time.
The lesson for us here is don't always trust what you see.
Wise advice Rhonda, I'm so glad you brought Star home again; I hope you find a good home for her - a very difficult decision for you I know. Best wishes, Vicci
Hi Star, Sooo sorry to hear what happened to your mare,I too know how hard it can be to give up your horse especially after they had been with you for as long as she was. I too bought my first horse & cared for it as well since she was 6months old. Do I ever miss her. I trained her from a foal my first horse all by myself never did it before. I sure did love every moment with her though too. She turned out quite well if I do say so myself. she was 12 yrs old when I had to sell her for her own good,as we were going through hard times & I didn't want to see her go without anything,so I thought it was in her best interest. Did sell her to someone whom I thought would be able to give her what she needed, untill she walked her into a strong electric fence made for work horses. She was by her shoulder so when she went up in the air because the fence wire wrapped around her leg,my horse went up & down as well as jumping sideways. The girl tried to blame it all on my horse!! I met her mom in the store one day and asked how she was her mom said fine now,but that she wanted me to know that it was her daughters fault & that she should have been paying attention to what she was doing instead of the boyfriend. Soo the truth got out. I haven't seen her since, my horse that is. Monty is right on when he says to get out front of your horse and teach them to stay out of your comfort zone. I know his methods work I have applied alot of them so far with the foals and yearlings I have recently bought & he is awesome,Monty that is. I thank him sooo much for his wisdom in Equus,& the Lord Jesus for showing him.I can not praise him enough and would sure like to meet Monty someday as well as Tom Deroucher. Where in N.B. do you live? I'm sorry about your husbands accident as well as I was about the girl who bought my horse. Keep in touch! I'd like to know how you are doing. Thanks ANGIE
Hi Ronda,
Only found your post just now, sorry for late reaction!
You've been through quite a lot in the past few years,my oh my, life's not easy somtimes!
Your love for Star and her deep trust in you are most important parts of keeping up courage.
Follow your heart!
Keep in touch,
Miriam

My health is still not so great but I still go out to Star everyday for her grooming. I love the way she greets me, hmmmmmmm she goes. She keeps me going.
Recently I tried to convince my husband we need to find a home for her. He kept silent which is what he does when de doesn't agree.
I started looking around and what I learned was pretty frightening for a horse.
People hear the name Monty Roberts and say I use his methods. So you think they will be nonviolent.
How wrong indeed. My first clue upon watching, they walk into the round pen with a lunge whip. DANGER. Then stand in the middle of the pen, smoking a cigarette. I had to cover my mouth to hide my smile.
They think because they have purchased an imitation Monty dually halter that they know his practises.
So yes to any who can become a certified Monty Roberts instructor and follow his methods 100%.
I have thought of you Amanda but the hassles(health wise and crossing the boarder) or us to get there makes that impossible for me.
Keep up the good work everyone.
Just now got back online and noticed you addressed me. Now let me ask where in N.B.do you live? Would like to keep in touch with you Star. I also have a disability but am going to try and push through it if at all possible. So will work with my babies at a slow pace and speed up as I see it is fit.As they learn that is. My disability was not caused by horses but by mans mistakes!! Take care til next time. Someone who cares.

I am new to the Uni and enjoying the lessons. I would like to purchase a Dually halter but the shipping is outrageous to Canada. I have a halter and long lines in my cart and the shipping is over $74 to get to me. That is US funds and we all know what that will look like after the exchange rate. So I'm wondering if there are any Canadian instructors who carry any of the tack who could ship to me at a more reasonable rate? Is that a thing?
thanks!
I just read your post now so I didn't do that. Maybe I will do that next time if I order anything else. I did order the Dually halter but nothing else due to the shipping. I am eagerly awaiting it's arrival!
No it has not arrived. The tracking info ends once it reached Canada on July 7. This is an unfortunate problem we have been having with Canada Post recently. Canada Post has not scanned it into their system yet so there is no tracking anymore. I am not sure what to do. I sent an email to the address where the shipping notice was sent to me, asking if there is anything to be done on that end, but i have not had a response yet.
Maybe we could get a group together for a class?
