Barn Sour, Spooking and Bolting

Hello! 100 lessons completed

What do you do if you have a barn sour horse who turns and bolts back to the barn or spooks and bolts? What training do you do to change these habits?

Never ride your horse back to the barn. Always get off a good distance from home and walk. Or ride a long way past your gate, get off and walk home. The reward for your horse is in coming back to the barn, you getting off, unsaddling him, grooming, feeding etc. All those things that say to him "your work is over, rest".
Monty also suggests swapping barns with a neighbour. You take one of your neighbours horses into your barn and send your barn sour horse to your neighbours. Changing the environment as well as always getting off an walking back to the barn goes a long way to keeping a horse "barn sweet" (have no idea if there is such a term, but you get my meaning ;) )
As for a horse that spooks and bolts...... I'm not hugely experienced in this area, so I hope there is some one else on here that will share about that one :)
As start though check out the "Spooky Kadina Chronicles" and "Georgia's' Phobias".
Look forward to hearing your progress :)

I kinda new to monty's method so give me some slack if I give you bad advice. I agree with Rahni also maybe sometimes if a horse does not feel like your incontrol they will try to go back to their comfort zone. You could carry a tie down with you so when you head to the barn if the horse bolts you can slow it at a walk, and maybe that will get the horse to relize you incontrol thers no need to run home. I have horse that know where to stop so I can untack them but, I had no experience really in this area either. So try just experimenting and youll figure it out!
