I am not very happy with the relationship between the horse and the person leading him. It looks very mechanical.

WAIT,WAIT,WAIT,Rudi,
Where are you talking about? Help me to make this more clear!!!
Are you talking about the lessons?
Are you talking about a person who is leading a horse she/he doesnt know?
Are you talking about everybody who is leading a horse, that it looks mechanical, because there is no relationship/connection?
Are you talking about.........
Cheers May
Hi, I see what Rudi is talking about. Rudi, have you ever been "talking through" this procedure of leading a horse for the first time (human and horse) with the Dually Halter ? I have and I can assure you that you listen very carefully to your instructor - much more if it is Monty - and do your best to walk on, pull, stop, walk on, make a turn. You definitely become a kind of a machine lead by a magic hand. This guy is doing his best not to loose the flow and is listening to what Monty is telling him. He does know his horse but is leading him the first time - I repeat - talked through it by an instructor. Nothing more and nothing less :-) VioBerlin
I don't get this statement at all, Rudi.
We are being taught the correct way to lead a horse and improve their stride.
To improve the stride of a horse increases the price or value of a horse and is good for them, in all ways.
What do you want the guy to do, hope along like a kid, skipping, talking to the horse, which will not understand him anyway.
We are being instructed, as he is as well, on the correct way to lead a horse.
When you watch my video of leading STAR you will also say I look mechanical as well.
I do not want STAR to be distracted by any incorrect movement I might make, so I am concentrating on what I'm doing.
Even lifting the lead rope will cause STAR to look away and be distracted, thus causing her stride to be inconsistant.
I am very close to STAR and for me there is a time and a place for everything.
Leading her for increase of overstride is not the time for play.

You are correct it is mechanical and quite forceful, but I do think that the purpose of handling the horse in this manner, is the handler does not have a relationship with the horse so if he is not forceful and sure of his movements the horse will not know what he wants.
I do agree with you that is not the way you want to lead your horse, but in this case the handler is schooling the horse and changing the way the horse moves, so his movement must always be the same to avoid confusion.
Personally I like to see people lead their horse in a relaxed manner to where the lead rope is really just decoration. The horse wants to be with you and go where you are going.
Cheers
Remember these videos are for training purposes :-) I have owned a horse who prior to using a dually would lead like this. Observe racehorses in the mounting yard and they all lead like this and many of the handlers struggle to hold them in check. My horse was taller than i am and was dangerous if he spooked, was likely to run right over me. With some dually training he became a calm well behaved horse to lead.

Thank you for your comments.
May: I am talking of the actual video lessons.
Ronda: In your video the relationship to your horse is visible, I don't think your movements are mechanical.
Hi all,
Yes Rudi, I understand now where you are talking about.
What Monty said in the demonstration in Devon, the rope has to be like a smile. When you rope smiles, then it is correct.
These horses were babies, Being asked to learn to lead properly first, and the handler was indeed being instructed by Monty on video for a lesson on the Uni, I would be sweating bullets! But the end for all three horses and the two handlers was perfection. Straight lines and backs relaxed walks and good manners while being lead and standing still. The handlers even relaxed.
Hello all,
I was wondering, is teaching horses to lead properly effective if you don't achieve join-up before leading... In riding club where I ride we don't have roun pen, just dressage pen(20x40m), and big pen for show jumping.. I've achieved join-up twice in dressage pen but it was very difficult. Can I just try to achieve horse's trust with daily care, comunication, etc. And than teach him to lead properly with dually??
Best regards,
Mirna
The dually is all you need to teach a horse to lead properly, while join up is nice it's not absolutely necessary when it comes to teaching a horse to properly lead. Just make sure that you know how to use the dually effectively otherwise it can be a little frustrating.
Good luck,
Kleinne
Thank you a lot, I've tried to work with dually once and the horse responded pretty well, he payed attention to me and stopped when I stopped. I am going to Hungary this summer for more education. Then, I will start to work more seriously ;)
Best regards,
Mirna
Hi mustang girl - the more you use the dually the easier it will be for you. I agree with Klienne - you don't need join up prior to teaching your horse to lead. Probably the reverse - get them used to the dually first and then try join up. Do watch all of Monty's lessons on the dually as it is important to be able to use it correctly to get the best responses.
I wanted to say absolutely MaggieF watching the Dually video multiple times really helps! I got a dually and was working with one of my two year old fillies and thought, 'hmmm Monty makes it look so easy.' I tried again the next day and my results were better, but not great. So, I watched the video again and when I put the dually on the next day, I spent extra time with the adjustment process: making sure it fit and PRESTO! She was ALL about 'where would I like her to go and how quickly!' Just like Zinfandel in the video!
Yes Eshultz, it takes time to get it right doesn't it but when you do the results are just great! I found watching Kelly Marks use the dually really helped too 'horse and country tv' UK - Monty and Kelly Marks "Horsemanship Essentials". "Kelly and the Donkeys" is one of the good ones. Towards the end of this video Kelly tries to get a stubborn donkey to respond to the dually. Good lesson on dually work!
lucky you guys, you live in UK, or USA and there are lots of shows on TV about horses, you can watch Monty on tv!!! here in Croatia, we are considered to be crazy if we want to ride horses or have them... not even mention violence-free training... but, I am determined to show our horse people that there are other ways too! I will continue to work with dually because there is one horse at the stable who really responds to my body language :)
I have to go now, a friend is coming, she wants me to show her Online Uni :)))
Regards,
Mirna
Good for you, Mirna!
