So I did my first join up and it went very well. My mare is 14years old and I have had her about 6 weeks and I have ridden her and she did well other than being VERY barn sour. So our first join up is done, she joined up and followed up and I released her back into the pasture. So now do I do the join up once a day for 5 days or twice a day for 3 days? Then what do I do from there? She knows how to stop, go, right, left, stand still, etc. I want to continue gaining her trust after join up...where do we go from here? THANKS!!

Hi dutton 5,
What a good feeling, having done Join-up with your mare, knowing her for such a short time. Please don't do Join-up for 5 days od twice a day for 3 days, this would be very boring for the two of you. What you could do is put a Dually halter on her, establish the trust by showing her the sweetspot at your shoulder where she can walk with you, stop when you stop, back up when you do, run when you run etc. This deepens the bond you started with your Join-up. After that you could put a curcingle or saddle on her and longline her, using the same bodylanguage you had for the Join-up. There are good lessons on both Duallywork and longlining on this Uni.
The barnsoreness might be an item to work on when you feel it's the right moment for it.
Most of all you can deepen the trust between yourself and your mare by living the principles of Join-up on a daily base, when you come into the pasture, etc. Be consistent and fair, let the needs of your horse lead you wherever it may take the two of you. There are no limits to understanding and trust.

Hello dutton 5!
Yes, I can totally agree with Miriam! Another idea would be to think about your mare's fears and then work on it (Is she afraid of plastic, water, dogs, etc.?). Or you could do the lessons about the mounting block. I think this is a very important lesson for any horse and any discipline.
But the most important: HAVE FUN WITH YOUR HORSE!

Hi I also did my first ever join up today with a quite old pony, 18 years, and it was pretty good. She joined up and followed up.
I intend to continue working with the dually halter to improve her ground manners, and then long line as she is primarily a driving pony and is pretty use to long reining already. Her main problem is separation anxiety and hopefully strengthening our bond and her trust in me will help her overcome this
