Training plan for an untouched youngster

Please upload your photo
I am about to get an untouched 3-year old stud colt. I found him grazing on my front yard one morning. He was out on adjoining acreage with no grass. He is being fed some type of all-in-one pellet feed. I went up to him with a treat and he took it from me and let me pet him, so he seems to have a good temperament.

I am a dressage rider and expect to spend the next year on ground work. I have never started a youngster. Does anyone have a training plan from the absolute first contacts? I have a 60-ft round pen to work in. But he has not been haltered or anything.

Thanks!

Hi & welcome to the Uni. You've already made a start. Spend time with him. Don't require anything of him but walk with him in the field & simply be together. Study the lessons here on the Uni. Practice your calm, slow breathing & your body language. Progress to putting a strap over his neck but do not catch him. Continue to slowly progress, working at his pace so he comes to trust you & accept each small step. Eventually you will be able to put the strap round his neck. From there a normal head collar will be possible. Be generous with your rubbing (praise) & have unending patience. You are both going to have so much fun. Cheers, Jo.

Hi. This weeks Q&A confirms my thoughts. Oh, why a normal halter first - it's easier to put on than a Dually. You'll see Monty uses a normal halter in the crush pen with wild mustangs. Good luck & keep us updated. Cheers, Jo.t
