About This Week’s Lesson

Dually Halter

Hello! 100 lessons completed 150 lessons completed

I really liked the Dually Halter lessons. My horse had been rearing on me at times when I attempted to school him back (he was grumpy in the middle of our Canadian prarie winters and just wanted to be free in the indoor ring). This really shaked my confidence in the use of this halter, so I stopped because I didn't want to give him "issues". I didn't want to create a memory in him of resentment to this halter. But I have started using it again and he is responding well. I have the confidence after watching the Monty uni videos of horses rearing for him. I see this is a normal horse response now, but you have to be calm and safe.

I am thinking of purchasing the Dually Halter for my Morgan Mares and am not sure of size.....Morgan's generally are in the category with Arabian's ......Would the small halter fit my girls or should I go with the medium Dually? Look forward to your answer.
Sincerely,
MaryJo E. Morse

Hi MaryJo!
This is a difficult question to answer! Look at Shy Boy with the small, red Dually Halter.
Today I worked with an Arabian, whose head is too big for the small, red one, but his nose too small for the black medium one. So I put the black one on and twisted the chinband around, so I could fit it correctly. If you considder buying one, maybe your shoe-repairer could add one or two holes.

Hi MaryJo!
I had the same problem when I bought mine.
I use the black (medium) one for my two year old SWB. He was the size of a large pony - but with a fine boned head - when I bought it 6 months ago. It fit - and still fits - quite well.
(He is constantly between sizes, it seems. When the noseband's too large the cheekstraps too tight - and if I release the neckband, the noseband just falls too low!)
Even if I have to use the inner holes, I am quite sure the red one would have become too small, so for something to grow into, I choose the correct size in this case.
Seeing as his size right now should correspond with an adult Morgan, I think black could fit yours. Otherwise, Miriam has excellent advice about adding a couple of holes.

Hi, Mary Jo-
I would recommend buying the black (medium) halter. It is an easy thing to put more holes in the straps if needed so you can size down the nose more. Hold an appropriate sized nail in a pair of long nose, insulated handle pliers. Heat it to red hot with a torch (a cigar or kitchen torch works perfectly well), and with a helper holding the strap taut, put the nail through the strap in the spot where you wish the new hole to be. If it's hot enough it goes through quickly and easily. Smells bad so do this in the garage. Clean up any sharp bits with a pair of nippers or a coarse emory board. I did this with my small Dually, as I had three Arab weanlings I wanted to use it on and the holes didn't allow the halter to be adjusted down snug enough. Worked great. Good luck!

I enjoyed this Lesson. It was an eye opener. Now I have so much more control when using The Dually Halter properly.
This is Joey's Favorite Halter!
BTW I had purchased my used and it came with no video so this lesson is a Blessing.
